My art show is dedicated to my younger brother Coleman. All the items displayed can be found in a day in my little brother's life starting the second he climbs onto the school bus. My brother is 8 and is in the second grade. He loves sugary things like soda. He likes to walk around with a Gatorade bottle which looks comically large to his tiny body and head. He loves the idea of being an athlete and his lunch. He claims to be on a bulk every time he pesters me for a snack, mimicking the response he hears his big brother make when he is seen eating an excessive amount of food, not knowing the meaning. Most days he will try anything to not go to school, arguing his case like a lawyer. But the nail in the coffin for his hope of not going is always putting on his excessively heavy backpack. Everything in my show has been thoughtfully handmade. The Coke bottle was made complete with the addition of the pop-tab. The Gatorade bottle was sculpted taller and with a bright orange lid to pop out around the darker colors making up the bottle. The lunch box was sculpted as a box with no lid. Later I draped a slab over the top of the box and folded it back to give off the half-open look. The zipper and handle were both finishing touches that I can’t imagine the lunch box without. The backpack was originally built much larger but with a week left collapsed in on itself. I started from scratch and made the second bag much smaller with added support beams inside of the bag to account for the weight. Similar to the Gatorade bottle, the book bag is portrayed with a hole in the bag with snapped straps to show how the evil bag might look in the eyes of my brother. The straps seemed about to snap due to the weight and the bag was just about to pop like a balloon with the amount of cramped objects. This show can relate to any younger kid but this show best resembles my brother.
